Longwall Electrical Systems
NEPEAN Power is able to offer complete engineered designed equipment for a complete longwall system ranging from IP 56/flameproof transformers, flameproof distribution control boxes to control and monitoring enclosures that are certified and compliant to all relevant standards.
The NEPEAN Power flameproof longwall DCB is available in various combinations up to 8 outlets at 3.3kV. The equipment is designed and manufactured with an emphasis on safety, reliability and accessibility for normal maintenance.
The DCB has separate enclosures for the main incomer supply, 3.3kV outlets, gas detection and PLC/control.
The isolator serves two functions, firstly it protects against overloads or short circuits, and the second is to provide a means of isolating power from the control enclosure. The control enclosure houses contactors and protection relays for each outlet, arranged in easily maintained modular sections.
It is both electrically and mechanically interlocked to the isolator compartment, to ensure that it can only be opened while the power is isolated. NEPEAN Powers longwall Control & Monitoring Enclosure is designed to complement NEPEAN Power’s longwall substation range utilising the PLC and SCADA systems to display all operating functions and fault conditions for the face supports, shearer, face drives, pumps station, substation, signalling and communication system, gas monitoring and mine included projects i.e. conveyor system.
The NEPEAN Power Longwall Substation can be manufactured in either flameproof or ingress protection versions up to 7.5MVA and typically 11KV/3.3KV.
A high tension custom built enclosure incorporating the 11KV. The design is type tested to IP56 as per the requirements of AS60529:2004 and type tested for arc fault containment to AS62271.200
The main transformer, rated for an incoming voltage of 11000V, 3 phase 50Hz and will be configured to provide a secondary voltage of 3300V up to 7.5MVA
The 3.3kV supply compartments, fully welded construction type tested to IP56 as per the requirements of AS60529:2004. The enclosure is a multi-compartment segregated distribution board incorporating outlets and is configured to meet the requirements of AS4871.2012. For ease of movement around the site the custom manufactured skid can be mounted on a motorised track.
The NEPEAN Power flameproof Load Centre/Distribution Control Box (DCB) is manufactured to the highest quality standards and can be adapted in design to incorporate individual specifications.
NEPEAN Power understand the importance of design safety and plant reliability, especially in the mine environment and as such NEPEAN Power is certified to AS 60079 or IECEx series of standards for the manufacture of equipment for explosive atmospheres.
The NEPEAN Power DCB is manufactured to include several basic designs and sizes and can accommodate a number of combinations including up to 11, 1000V outlets.
The DCB enclosure can be constructed using stainless steel flanges or can be completely produced with stainless steel. The unit can also be supplied on a galvanized metal skid base for ease of transportation around the worksite.
Underground Medium Voltage Switchgear
NEPEAN Power’s Medium Voltage Switchgear including section circuit breakers, switchboards and high tension ends, etc, are designed using the latest technology and software in design development allowing our solutions to be the most innovative and safe.
NEPEAN Power’s switchgear is fully tested prior to delivery to our client’s worksite. NEPEAN Power’s testing facilities ensure the finished product is safe and fully compliant with the Australian and Mining Standards.
NEPEAN Power’s switchgear enclosures are manufactured from stainless steel (or mild steel on request) and incorporates viewing windows for ease of physical monitoring.
The switchgear allows for a heavy duty galvanised skid base that allows for ease of movement. The section circuit breaker includes a heavy duty galvanised skid base that allows for ease of movement.

NEPEAN Power’s substations are customised to suit the individual requirements of our customers. The adaptation of our products is able through the use of the latest technology in SCADA control and the extensive experience of NEPEAN Power Engineers.
Available in various combinations of input, output and size, NEPEAN Power’s substations can be configured to suit most situations dependent on our customers requirements. Mining substations are typically used for longwall, development, distribution and pumping application. And are manufactured in either flameproof and or ingress protected (IP66) variations.
NEPEAN Power's underground mining substations can be manufactured up to 7.5MVA with primary voltages as high as 22kV.
The high voltage end is constructed from sheet steel that has been fully folded and welded to a certified IP design. The design incorporates NEPEAN type tested arc fault containment. Safe touch potentials are maintained via separate compartments for all system voltages including operating and metering.
Transformers may be gas, liquid filled or dry type, ranging from 50kVA in various combinations of primary and secondary voltages dependent upon customer specific needs.
The low voltage end fabricated from sheet steel, fully folded and welded to a certified IP rating. Construction depends on customer needs and requirements. Standard substation protection includes earth fault limitations on the star point of all secondary windings, earth leakage tripping is provided back to the high voltage circuit breaker. Each outlet can be protected by moulded case circuit breakers, fuses and or contactors, earth leakage protection, cable fault lockout protection, earth continuity, loss of vacuum, frozen contactor, overload, short circuit, with visible break isolation if specified etc.
NEPEAN Power’s substation includes a skid base that by default is constructed to a very robust and proven design ensuring they are capable of being towed or pushed into position in adverse conditions. The base is usually hot dipped galvanised and can be provided with towing bollards, floating axles, removable rubber wheels and fully plated bases to provide catchments of transformer oil.
Each substation upon completion follows through a process of Factory Acceptance Testing, Compatibility Testing (where necessary) and commissioning to ensure operational status on delivery. Manuals including flameproof dossier and drawings are provided and options are available for ongoing support for each product including life cycle management.
